Did you consider an iPhone before getting the Desire HD? If yes, what were your reasons to choose for the HTC? Are you happy with your choice?

- I did consider the iPhone, yes
- There were a lot of reasons tbh. Dutch contracts were 200 euros cheaper per year for the Desire HD. (I pay 580 euros (746.70 dollars) in one year for the Phone itself + 350 call minutes and 700 texts and unlimted internet). The iPhone contract was 200 euros more, and had half the texts available.

Furthermore, when searching the internet for reviews I only read the non-biased ones, and most of them were actually very positive about the Desire HD. More so even than the iPhone.

And Flash of course.

- Up 'till now yes, I think I made the right decision, and I'm enjoying my phone tremendously Smiley

Any one else feel like contributing?

I didn't want to be another sheep following the crowd.  Wink Tongue

Plus, I guess I'm the rebel type - don't like being told by *any* company what I can or can't do with the device, product etc I spend my hard earned $$$ on.

Don't get me wrong - I use a Mac every day, but being tied to a device that has limitations implemented from the start is not, in my opinion, acceptable. A bit like buying car A and then being told the top capable speed is only 30kph, and you can't go any faster, when cars B-Z are quite happily running along at 100+ kph.

In a nutshell: I like to make up my own mind as to what I can or can't do with a phone and not have the owner of the company that manufactures it, decide what is best for me.  Grin

Very well said that man - my feelings in a nutshell - hence no 3GS or 4G for me.

Each to their own.

I went to the darkside about 3 years ago, and replaced my HTC Orbit with an iphone, yes it blew me away, and the later ones too, until the new one, which does not float my boat.
I have heard about Android for ages, and after looking at a few reviews, i decided to give HTC a try again. What a revelation, its just like an iphone, but better, top apps are free, the sat nav works just like a proper sat nav,and the bluetooth works. You are not tied to anything, the freedom is a revolution, I used to think Apple was running the smartphone show, but there is nothing that their latest offering can do which my Desire HD cant do,and more importantly, the OS and Apps are amazing, and in the most, free.

I was offered a Iphone 4 for £99 and £30 a month instead i went for the desire for free and £30 a month. I simply wouldnt own anything Apple because i hate the company. So i try to distance myself as far as i can from their products. So between you and me, im bloody pleased that Apple have had so many problems with Iphone 4 because hopefully the customers will start to see Apple for the parasites they are.

(Rant over) lol

I didn't consider the iFail at all.

I did however consider the Sony Ericsson Satio, and when I had to take my C905 to the shop (because the charging contacts were worn out) I nearly bought a Satio on the spot.

However for some reason I went back home and checked out some youtube reviews of the Satio.  That's when the Desire HD caught my eye, and I ended up buying one the same day.

Did I consider the iPhone?

Yes. Considered the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. The iPhone 3 doesn't have anything on the Desire HD spec-wise and the iPhone 4 just have too many problems.

If yes, what were your reasons to choose for the HTC?

Specs and Android, with a sprinkle of hope and optimism (for FroYo and the Market) coupled with an immense helping of fear/hatred towards Apple and closed apps environment, washed down with a generous cup of free apps.

Well, actually, I hated iPhone. I'm too much a rebel to like to conform to the "in" thing. I hate paying for apps and games. Specs-wise the 3Gs loses out, and the iPhone 4 has way too many headaches. So I decided to research about alternatives, that is Nokia, SE or Android. Samsung wasn't even a contender except for the Galaxy S

Nokia Symbian OS is very cluttered, and my GF still only uses about half of her E72's functions and potential. Every time I used her phone, I had to wonder where to activate this or that. SE... is just too fragile (from experience) for me. Constant freezing (lousy processor?) even in their (at the time) flagship model and using the M2 card doesn't help either.

So I decided to look into Android. A quick scan showed which phones available in Malaysia can compete with the iPhone. Narrowed the list down to phones which are subsidized by my carrier (Maxis in Malaysia) and was greeted by the three choices of HTC Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy and Sony Ericsson X10. The x10 got killed because it only runs 1.6 (update coming in for version 2.1, which is one version too late), Samsung got killed coz I hate Samsung and some sites claimed that Desire HD is better. And HTC had Sense, which is still better than any other alternatives (Tried ADW.launcher and Launcher Pro).

Are you happy with your choice?

Yes. Still tweaking my baby, getting the GF jealous of all the attention I'm not paying to her. Could only wish for a better battery life...

Loving it. Appart from having to do a factory reset after installing 2.2 and uninstalling Google Maps update (Maps stopped working after install Angry) it's been amazing. Like the above comments, I refuse to get sucked in to the iphone hype. Nearly all the reviews on the Desire HD where 5 star ( I only found one 1 star, returned on a small thing that did not suit the owner)
My former phone is a HTC Touch Cruise. I am keeping it as a PDA/SatNav in the car. Thats the nice thing about smart phones, they work without a SIM.
Whenever someone asks me what phone I have, it's always a blank expression when I say it's a HTC "Whats that?" is the usual reply Grin
Even though it is larger than my old phone, it is so much thinner that even in a Pdair metal lined case, it sits better in the pocket.
I'm sold Wink

Tmobile once tried to do a hard sell with an Iphone 3g s when they didn't have any Desire HD's in stock. I was/am very anti-Iphone and felt quite offended that Tmobile would think that I'd consider the Iphone a better or equal option.  Huh

Same thing happened to me just yesterday.  I was in a phone shop, thinking about buying a second Desire HD.  The salesman saw me looking at it but told me to avoid it because "the Desire HD is an overpriced phone with lots of problems" and "the iPhone 4 is much better value for money".   Wrong comment to the wrong customer.

He then made the mistake of leading me to the one iFail 4 they had on display.  I immediately took it onto the deathgrip, pulled out my Desire HD with my other hand and told him that I didn't have any problems with it and in fact had much better reception on the HTC.  His face when I pulled out the Desire HD was priceless.

And in case you were wondering, I didn't buy a phone.  I might get an HD soon tho.

I lol'ed again!

Anyway, my country will have an iPhail 4 launch this weekend, and I'm tempted to go there to show off my custom-moded Desire HD, the ever increasing threat of fanbois in Malaysia means I'll go there in a Kevlar vest.

Anyway, I did remember this nugget of information from my carrier when I tried to look'em up for Android goodness. Scroll to the last Q&A in the FAQ

Hi guys (and gals),

About the iPhone (and Apple):
I like Apple and i did consider the iPhone. It's a quite good piece of hardware...
...but like EVERY Apple product, it's very overpriced.
That's the main reason i didn't buy any Apple products since i bought an Apple II printer some 25 years ago...
You see, they try to sell things to your heart, not to your brain...
Don't get me wrong, it's not that their products are not good or apealing... It's just that they get you "hooked" and then they charge you for your addiction...
Honestly: I drooled all over that "parade" of products they put up all these years... The Newton, The Macs, The iPods, etc...

About the Desire HD:
I'll keep this simple:
It's not good, it's... Wow!
It's better than the iPhone...
And it's less expensive!
Historicaly: I have one Qtek (later became HTC) and 3 HTC's - They all work!
I went for a swim in Tagus river oblivious that i had my HTC Diamond touch in my pocket...
I took out the battery and the card, dried it out ... and it still works perfectly ... used it for another full year before buying the Desire HD...

Conclusion:
No decision issues!

Hi before i went for HTC i looked into HTC & Iphone but at the end of the day HTC was very new to me, i dont even know a phone called HTC, but at the end of the day,HTC DESIRE HD is more powerful than iphone,is only that iphone is usa phone and most of the international news is from USA so that why it looks like it has the uper-hand over HTC:
But with time the world will know that HTC is the men phone iphone is afriad of.but HTC SHOULD WORK more on the apps market by controling everything that going on there most the apps there dont even need to enter the market and most of the apps should be like 99cent is very easy to pay and apps owner will make a lots of turn-up and make more money that the other once seeing one apps for 3/5 €

Thanks
