How do you transfer a song from 'my music' on my pc to the Desire HD please.
I dragged a song from my pc to the mp3 player icon of the Desire HD but it hasn't worked.

I simply made a folder on the SD card and dropped my mp3 files in there.  No player or app required, only the usual Windows explorer.

After disconnecting the Desire HD from the PC (be sure to use the "remove hardware" function, or you might mess up the SD card) , it'll load the SD card and the Desire HD's music app will automatically find all songs on there.

Just had another look and my attempt did work.
Will take your advice and make a folder on the sd card.
