When I got the HTC Desire HD, I thought it was great. Enjoyed playing with it for 1 week (bought on 14 Aug) then it died on me on 21 Aug.  It would not charge, would not start up, stayed on white screen and even when I did a hard reset, it still wouldn't work.  Sent it in for service on 24 Aug and waited and waited and waited.

I called customer service a few times but was told they were waiting for parts.  It's been a month and I am still waiting.

In the meantime, when Froyo was released, my wife's HTC Desire HD also failed (wifi error).  But at least her HTC Desire HD was repaired and returned to her.

I cannot recommend HTC Desire HD to anyone.  And if you look through the forums, you will see a lot of feedback about many problems.

If only I had checked the forums before buying.

mmm I must agree to some extent, My desire has also had it's fair share of problems. Sometimes it's hard to believe that HTC actually tested the Desire HD before they released it. But the problems I have encountered so far have been more software related and have been sorted out with the help of the good people on this forum and by myself.

I'm sorry to hear that your Desire HD has made you have regrets about your purchase but in my opinion, it's still a great device. Being a former windows 6.1 smartphone owner i'm used to glitchyness. Hope you get it all sorted and become content with what is an awesome piece of kit.

If only I had checked the forums before buying.

All smartphones have their issues, so you wouldn't buy a phone at all if you rely too much on forums.  Google for any phone you can think of and add "problem" after the name.
I actually did check the forums before buying mine.  As a long time Sony Ericsson customer, I was actually planning on getting a Satio as my first smartphone.

Your phone obviously developed a hardware error, most likely bad memory.  Nothing that can be done about that.
Your wife's phone didn't require a repair tho.  WiFi problems after the update are common with Android (not just the Desire HD), and easy to fix.

As for recommending it to anyone ... that's a tough call.  I know people I would recommend it to, and people I woudn't.  But that has nothing to do with quality, more with how they use their phones.

HTC Desire A8181 - HT08

« Reply #35 on: September 29, 2010, 11:17:09 PM »

ok, I'm gonna barge in here and say the x10 sucks. Or SonyEricsson sucks. Read it here for an gadget-geek's views on the phone, and the comments here if you wanna know whether the X10 sucks or not.

FYI, multi-touch, speed improvements, kernel improvements, browser improvements, multi-touch, tethering support, and multi-touch should be reasons enough to kill the x10, which is still stuck on 1.6 til today...

Sometimes, resellers give manufacturers a bad name. I have known of carriers who just relegate after-sales service to an afterthought. The reason why I stuck with my carrier through bad connections and higher price is because I know how their system works. I can get my issues settled quickly and easily enough that they are (kinda) scared of me.

But I do believe that most power-users are more than satisfied with the performance of the HTC Desire HD, although mainstream users might not be happy with the amount of tinkering it entails. For that, I truly advise you to pick up an iPhone, despite its problems. It is designed to be used straight from the box with little to no set-up. A little magical, if you like.

The Desire HD is more... robotic. She is like a shy lover. The more time you spent tinkering, loving and caring for it, the more likely you'll realize that she is truly amazing, with much more potential than just the looks and feel of the iPhone's slut-ish ways.

The Desire HD is intelligent. She isn't afraid of you trying new things. When you try to leave it won't saddle you with emotional blackmail. She stays still and quiet, waiting for your gentle caress and true understanding.

Like a Queen of Hearts, you must win her over with understanding of her deep roots, and she is never afraid of you experimenting with new ROMs. You can keep doing it with her, and in the morning she'll get up, brush of the dust and get ready to go with you again.

But she is not faultless. All that energy she needs to get up and stay up, and all the roles she play... keeping you connected, getting your phone calls, playing music for you, acting as a mobile entertainment, all the games you play with her... All these tasks take its toll on her. Especially since you always demanded her to be responsive, she has to be alert and running on full speed almost all the time. So she gets a little tired earlier than expected and you spit and curse at her. Heck, we guys have 3 square meals a day. How often do you feed the Desire HD? Do you really think that once a day is enough?

The Desire HD is built on solid grounds. She might not look as pretty as the slut from Apple, but oh my, she is a looker by her own rights. Didn't your mother teach you that true beauty comes from inside? The Desire HD has a strong, and tender loving heart. Not afraid to push herself to 998.4MHz when the call comes, and mildly puring at 245.0MHz when she is not needed. Sure, you might complain about her internal memory, but she is a lady, and doesn't stuff herself full of apps. She needs an App2SD+ handbag for that.

Her upbringing also gives her credit. Android in nature, she graduated summa cum laude from the HTC school with Sense honours. And despite many insulting her university degree by rooting and flashing her a new ROM, she doesn't mind. She enthusiastically embraces these ROMs and make them her own. Not like the other b*tch that so often has to be sprung from the Apple penitentiary.

The Desire HD truly cares for you. She keeps your most important data where it is the most safest. In her bosoms and in the Google clouds. She knows the frailty of her electronic mind and keeps a copy of your contacts, calendar and e-mail elsewhere, lest she fails. Even in her death she makes provision for you to move on.

And lest you forget, she makes it possible for you to keep up with your friends. She keeps the stream of Twitter and FB updates straight to you. Because she knows you care about your friends and your (sic) girlfriends. She doesn't mind that you spend rigorous hours with them. In fact, she facilitates these events too. Never had she complained about your bigotry, your two-timing, your endless fondling of her buttons. Never.

So, I just wanna say, the Desire HD deserves to be loved. Ask yourself, how much has she done for you? And how much have you done for her? So go home, feed her and caress her. Brush her screen lightly and watch for the occasional shudder. Don't harshly jab her buttons. Don't be hard on her just because you don't understand her. And if you're stuck, we are here to help you.

Hope you have a wonderful time with your Desire HD...

Sometimes it's easy to forget that we buy these devices primarily to use as a telephone. The X10 has a couple of issues - the earpiece is a bit on the quiet side, so if you're the kind of person who finds yourself trying to communicate in noisy bars and clubs you might have some issues with it. More importantly, there's some bizarre software glitches that cause the phone to forget about missed calls and text messages - which is definitely not ideal.

The HTC Desire HD is definitely the most comfortable "slab of glass" style phone I've ever used. The rounded shape at the top is so much nicer on the ear than the metal rim of the iPhone or the plastic rim of the X10.

Well, I haven't had any problems with my Desire HD so far. Except for the battery life, which is dreadful but not worse then any other phone in its class and slightly better then the iPhone 3GS,  I would give it an all round thumbs up.

I had my issues with my Desire HD, but after the great after sales service (direct from HTC - replaced 2 motherboards), I've not had any issues so far with the new one and its being worked hard.

My brother had a X10 when he was visiting me and the battery drain on the phone was alot worse than the desire. I think the X10 is made by HTC for SE so for me its the DESIRE.

X10 is more bulky but really no more real estate than the Desire HD. Plus, HTC Sense is better UI.

I baught the Xperia x10 the day it came out, i loved the phone...for 3 hours... Then while the months went by i totally and utterly regreted buying the phone so i sold it and baught the HTC desire...

The desire is the best phone i have ever owned, sony made too many mistakes with the xperia...Adding timescape, mediasape...software updates took ages (and still havn't happened yet!!!!) people still waiting to be upgraded to 2.1 !!!!!! The camera is rubbish, the desire camera quality is better.

Seriously, if this is your choice go for desire hands down, i love this phone and now that i have calibrated the battery i freaking love it more!

By the way, hey guys this is my first post... I had to say something once i saw this thread lol

...And very much appreciated it is too Kalfou, welcome to the forum. I started this thread whist being in too minds, the good people here made my mind up for me. My partner got the x10 and I thankfully got the Desire HD.

Well time showed me that it was the right decision, I'm still buzzing on the Desire HD and my partner?...she gave her x10 away to to a family member and went back to her c905.

My smug mode is still in overload.  Grin

In all fairness, Reddwarf ... the C905 is an exceptional phone.  I'm still not sure wether to put the Desire HD or the C905 on #1 of my "best phones ever" list.  So picking a C905 over an X10 is easy.

Desire HD all day!!

X10 is toooooo BIG! And limited to single touch screen (i believe) will still be single touch after updates too. May change when it gets the Froyo update tho.
